Steve McClaren has been sacked as England manager after last nights 3-2 defeat to Croatia, which ruined England’s hopes of Euro 2008 qualification.
England were two down within 15 minutes, after Scott Carson’s error gifted Portsmouth midfielder Nico Kranjcar an opener for Croatia, and then the England defense messed the offside trap up and Ivica Olic took it around Carson for a second.
After that the game evened itself out, and 10 minutes after the break, Jermaine Defoe won a penalty for England, after the linesman spotted his shirt being pulled (a very soft penalty decision). Lampard converted the spot kick, and less than 10 minutes later David Beckham’s cross found Peter Crouch who took an excellent volley after taking it down on his chest.
But England suddenly went quiet after pulling it back to 2-2, and Croatia took advantage, Mladen Petric getting too much space and then firing the ball into the back of Carson’s net to knock England out of Euro 2008 before they had even reached it.
And this morning, boss Steve McClaren and assistant Terry Venables were sacked by the FA. Possible replacements include Jose Mourinho, who is apparently not interested, and former Bolton boss Sam Allardyce, who is also apparently not interested. Those who haven’t taken themselves off the list include Alan Shearer (?), Alan Curbishley and Steve Coppell.
