It would now be an amazing result if Bolton didn’t get relegated, after today’s 4-0 defeat at Villa Park. Gabriel Agbonlahor and Marlon Harwood were both on target for Villa and Gareth Barry netted twice.
Gary Cahill and Gavin McCann both faced their old club, but fellow former Villan Jlloyd Samuel was dropped to the bench.
Megson just did his usual ’stand there and talk quietly’ while possibly trying to avoid the subject of relegation:
To score the first goal will invariably prove to be crucial.
It may seem obvious, but once you go a goal down you have to come out a bit and start taking one or two chances, and the quality in the league we play in is probably the highest in the world and you get picked off.
It was awful defending from our point of view for the first goal and from that point we never recovered.
We can’t keep doing what we’re doing at the moment. We’ve taken one point from the last 27, to say its relegation form is an understatement.
But we have played some decent periods in most games among that, and I think at times one or two things haven’t gone our way.
But today we can’t turn around and say it was down to misfortune, we played badly, we gave them an awful sloppy goal to start off with and then couldn’t get back into it.
I think we have the never-say-die attitude.
In fact, there was a couple of occasions when we were 4-0 down that our centre-halves were still flying forward trying to get us a goal, and the left-back is still bombing on, it was maybe a little bit naïve, but I think the attitude was certainly okay.
The endeavour and effort they put into games is fine.
The quality at times today was poor, the running power of Villa caused us a lot of problems and the strength of Carew up top, and Harewood comes on to magnify that as well.
So it was a bad day for us and the only plus point for us today is that, although another game is gone which is a worry for us, the bottom of the table didn’t change.
Our goal difference has certainly suffered today, but in terms of points nothing has changed in the bottom four.

At this rate we could even finish below Derby! Although they would have to only drop 3 points in their remaining 6 games… ![]()

the end of a proud time in the premiership championship here we come !!!!!!!!!!!!! perhaps the sale of anelka was not quite as good a deal now may have got millions for him but loosing multi millions by going down seems a bit stupid
